Heartworm Testing

Though heartworms can infect feline and canine friends, we strongly recommend annual heartworm testing for dogs. We process the test in our in-house laboratory and typically perform it between February and June. Testing is the only way to diagnose this parasite and treat your pet before heartworm disease does irreparable damage.

How quickly do you process the test?

One of the benefits of our in-house laboratory is promptly processing bloodwork like the diagnostic parasitic blood screen. After taking your pet’s blood sample, their test results will be available in 24 hours. If you suspect your pet has an infection, it’s essential you schedule an appointment at 519-661-0496. Signs of heartworms often show in later stages of the disease, including:

• Persistent cough and possible coughing up of blood
• Difficulty breathing
• Reluctance to exercise and tiredness, even after light activity
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss

What happens if my pet is diagnosed with heartworm disease?

Depending on the progression of the disease, our veterinary team will create a treatment plan for your pet. We treat heartworm disease over a few months with the help of medication. We perform routine bloodwork to monitor your pet’s progress throughout the process. In addition to treating your pet, we aim to ensure they feel as comfortable as possible throughout these procedures.

How can I prevent heartworm disease?

Transmitted by mosquitoes, heartworms can grow up to 11 inches long and live up to seven years in your dog. During this time, they can cause damage to their lungs, heart and blood vessels. Their long lifespan can create a host of complications for your pet, so we recommend regular preventative medication to protect them.
