Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a drug-free and painless treatment that improves the body’s healing process.

Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine which has been used as a therapeutic treatment for centuries. We determine if your pet is a good candidate based on what’s ailing them and whether we think acupuncture helps with pain management. If you’re interested in learning more about acupuncture, please contact us at 519-661-0496.

Is acupuncture the right fit for my pet?

We insert small, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points in your pet’s body. These points are usually in areas like muscle or tendons with nerve endings and vessels that can promote blood flow and release endorphins. We’ll help you determine if this ancient practice could benefit your pet. We often integrate it into our pain management treatment plans to improve your pet’s quality of life. Acupuncture can aid in the treatment of the following to manage pain:

  • Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Mobility Disorders
  • Disc Disease
  • Cancer Care
  • Neurological Conditions
  • Lameness
  • Cranial Cruciate Ligament Injuries
  • Elbow Dysplasia
  • Patellar Luxation
  • Orthopedic Procedures

Can it be used with Western medicine?

Our hospital integrates various alternative practices like acupuncture along with Western veterinary medicine to support rehabilitation therapy and pain management. We stand by this safe, pet-friendly practice as a way to reduce pain and inflammation in your pet’s body. Acupuncture triggers the release of the feel-good hormone serotonin, which transmits a message to your pet’s body to help reduce pain.

What to Expect When Your Pet is Scheduled for an Acupuncture Treatment

  • Every patient begins with a Comprehensive Initial Examination with Dr. Bonnie Wesley who will assess your pet’s current condition and create a treatment plan.
  • On your first acupuncture session, Dr. Bonnie will evaluate and determine the frequency and duration of future sessions.
  • Acupuncture treatments take 20 minutes once the needles are placed.
  • Pet parents are encouraged to be in the room but can also choose to drop off their furry friend for the duration of the appointment.
  • At the completion of the session, we will remove the needles and they are ready to go home.
